Klaralund is Done

FINALLY! Klaralund’s page was removed from the Knitting Knotebook. After months of sitting in the basket, I sewed her together this weekend. (Yes, Holly, I will bring her on Wednesday for you to try on. ) I wore Klaralund to work today and received loads of compliments.

I will block Klaralund after the Thanksgiving holiday. I must find the table in the laundry room first. I hate, hate, hate doing laundry. I took pictures before I left for work today. It’s the first time I have ever attempted the self-portrait. It’s harder than it looks, that’s for sure!

Overall Klaralund is a great project and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for that first sweater. The finishing is so very simple. No sleeve easing to worry about. I made the sleeves 2 inches shorter than the suggested length. After blocking they should be about wrist length. I might be making another in a different colorway. Perhaps this pattern with a summer weight yarn? any suggestions?

WARNING! Rant ahead:

Why is it when non-knitters admire your work they automatically say “you could sell blah, blah and make money.”

I respond, “No, you can’t. If I sold this sweater [Klaralund] it would cost at least $400. The cost of the yarn and my time.”

Next out of people’s mouths is usually something along the lines of, “why don’t you use less expensive yarn?”

My response, “Why don’t you eat Spam so you can save money on your grocery bill. You might not like it but it’s cheap.”

HELLO, it is not about the cost of the yarn. If I liked less expensive yarn I might choose to knit with it. I decided to knit with this yarn not because it was expensive but because it’s gorgeous, appropriate for my sweater and I liked it! Do I really want to spend hours and hours knitting with yarn that doesn’t have a nice hand to it. Or isn’t a joy to look at? There are so many wonderful feeling and beautifully colored yarns available to me, I think not.

Sorry for the rant, I just don’t get people sometimes. It’s not about the money, it’s the quality. I’m going home to my Debbie Bliss Chucky Merino, quite possibly the most delicious yarn I’ve knit with so far in my short knitting life. It’s like buttah only better because it’s orange.

Are you properly dressed?

I hate it when I see children not properly dressed for the weather. It makes me sad. Often it's because their family simply can’t afford the proper garments. As an adult I can choose to leave my coat behind and often do.

I had just graduated from college and was working as a receptionist in a direct marketing agency. My salary covered little more than rent and living expenses. I, along with the other recent grads, would often complain of this around the coffee pot. It was around the holidays and I was having lunch with my mentor, the VP of Sales. He would often invite me to spend lunches lurking on conference calls or walking me through a proposal or program set-up. During this particular lunch, he tactfully asked if I had a proper professional-looking winter coat. He had noticed that I arrived at work with very little protection against the elements. At that time, I was usually dropped off by a friend right in front of my office. Of course, his car was warm when I got in and the run from the curb to the door made a coat unnecessary. You see, I am not a big fan of heavy winter coats and will usually go without if I can.

I have often thought of his care and concern for my well-being. Not everyone cares enough to even notice such “small” details. Even fewer care enough to ask a question. Far fewer do anything at all about. Even though I had the means to have warm garments, it meant the world to me that someone cared enough to make sure I did. Years later, I found out that my co-worker/friend/mentor had one of his wife’s too small winter wool coat in the car to give me, if needed.

Karma is a boomerang. I have an opportunity to give a warm feeling to another person. I am going to knit a hat (or more) for Safe Shores. Emily stopped by Knit Happens and told us about the program. Kristine did not hesitate to enlist the Knit Happens circle in the cause. These hats will be given to the children who come to the Center. These children range for babies to late teens. I hope when my hat is given to one of the children, they feel warm on the inside and know people care.

Now, I’ve got to leave work and go home to start my hat. I think I’m going to use the pattern Wendy posted on her site today.

Weekend update

Weekend Fun

I love weekends! I very much enjoy spending time with my friends and Friday night was spent just the way I like it . . . with friends. We started the evening at Captain Pell’s (my favorite place for crabs!) and ended the night at Stinky Dave’s Bar and Pool Hall. Where the crowd was hopping until the wee hours of Saturday morning. YAWN, I’m sleepy! The DH entertained us with live music, several people enjoyed a friendly game of darts (we hid those during the political debate), others played pool and some of the girls held a fashion show in the kitchen. Only the fashion show was captured on film.

Saturday was a late brunch at Silver Diner with the DH and a day at Knit Happens. A wonderful day spent around the back table with the “irregulars.” I had my first taste of Nutella EVER! Thanks Erika! Why have I never had such yummy goodness? I can see Nutella will be a stock item in our pantry. Of course, the afternoon included the usual run to Starbucks for Ginger-crack Lattes.

The important stuff

The new Knit Happens tote can carry quite a bit. Yesterday’s haul: 20 balls of Debbie Bliss Merino Chunky in a most fabulous and discontinued ORANGE color way, 1 set of size 2 dpns, 6 skeins of the super cool Knit Happens sock yarn, a small notions bag and 5 buttons that are perfect for the new DB Merino. Speaking of Debbie Bliss, are you a member of the club? I am and by personal invitation of Miss Bliss herself. I can't wait to start knitting with my orange yarn.  I might have to stop all project and start on that one.

Have I told you lately?

How much I adore my Clapotis? You’ll notice this one was not allowed to walk away from home on Friday night. I will knit another in a more neutral colorway.

Since the DH is off playing golf, I get to spend the day knitting.

Hope everyone has a wonderful week!
